Product Manager, Industry Services at TÜV SÜD Canada

#FutureInYourHands – This motto properly describes how TÜV SÜD empowers its employees. It’s best to hear from TÜV SÜD executives and staff members what their personal experiences are working for TÜV SÜD.

Can you describe your role within the company?
With my current position as Product Manager for Canada, within TÜV SÜD's Industry Services Division, I am responsible for the certification of pressure equipment fabricated in Canada destined for the European market. To ensure compliance with European directives I must verify equipment is designed correctly, witness inspection and testing, reporting and issuance of certificates of conformity.

How did you choose this career path?
Once I realized I wasn’t going to be a footballer and I couldn’t sing, I found my ability in mathematics leading me to a degree in engineering. I began working in pressure vessel design and fabrication which, I believe, gave me a great foundation and understanding of pressure equipment.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
No two days are the same. We constantly receive different designs of pressure equipment and pressure assemblies that require certification. My role provides the perfect blend of hands-on engineering, problem solving and customer interaction.

What are some trends you're keeping an eye on in the Canadian marketplace?
Manufacturing is the single most important and largest economic sector in Canada. Over the past year, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) partnered with the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition to investigate the challenges companies will face over the next 15 years. They developed an ambitious plan to invigorate growth which, hopefully, will double Canada’s manufacturing output by 2030.

Is there an engineering-related innovation that fascinates you?
I find the evolution of metal 3D printing fascinating, and it could provide major changes in how pressure equipment is fabricated. 3D printing of plastics is commonplace, but it is interesting to see if the printing of metals follows suit.

What do you think the industry will look like 20 years from now?
With continued economic and technological globalization, I believe we will see more standardization of international codes and regulations. In addition, fabrication and production techniques will continually evolve and improve. Pressure equipment will always be regulated and TÜV SÜD will evolve and move with the times.

When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I really enjoy sports. I'm a sports fanatic who has migrated effortlessly from playing to watching throughout my 30s.
