account executive at TÜV SÜD America

#FutureInYourHands – This motto properly describes how TÜV SÜD empowers its employees. It’s best to hear from TÜV SÜD executives and staff members what their personal experiences are working for TÜV SÜD.

Can you discuss your role within TÜV SÜD?
I am our Southern California Account Executive within the Industrial Consumer Group. From a general perspective, my role is to increase business, so I fill our local San Diego safety lab, as well as our EMC wireless lab, which is definitely one of our most diverse and specialized testing labs. I also consider myself to be a strong customer advocate.

What drew you to a career with TÜV SÜD?
I’ve been involved in this industry for quite a long time. I was originally working for a competitor, but was interested in making a career change. I thought TÜV SÜD offered a more well-rounded, competitive package, so I chose to join and develop my career here. I've been with TÜV SÜD for 10 years now.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
I really enjoy the involvement I have with customers and helping to bring their product to market. While all customers have the same goal to get their product to market, not all customers have the same level of understanding of regulatory requirements. I look at my role as really being one of service and helping to determine the most strategic approach based on their product roadmap. I think it’s also important to be an advocate for the customer and to contribute to bridging the gap from a communication standpoint, whether that is between my company and theirs, or even within their organization.

How have you had to adjust your responsibilities due to the current COVID-19 pandemic?
I have had to become more innovative when it comes to communicating with clients and colleagues. With less face-to-face interaction, I’ve had to adjust by scheduling conference calls and Skype meetings. I think many people, including our customers and internal employees, are facing the same challenges, so it’s been important to develop more of an innovative spirit to provide the best support we can for our customers.

Do you think the future of the industry will be impacted by current events?
I believe more companies will be open to telecommuting by allowing more employees to stay home. In sales, I’d come into the office a few days a week and travel to visit customers, but I also spent quite a bit of time working from home. I believe productivity levels remain consistent, and even improve, while working from home and I think companies will notice that and become less inclined to have people in the office.

Are there any challenges you've faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Over the course of my career, I’ve learned that new changes are constantly taking place. For example, new products are being rapidly produced as technology continues to evolve, so in this industry, we must be adaptive to new technological advancements. Personally, I feel like I’m always learning something new and shifting my focus to explore alternate perspectives that allow me to grow in my career.

When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I am a pretty avid reader, although only able to squeeze it in before bed. Living in Southern California, there is a lot of opportunity to get outdoors so I run and workout at least a few times a week. I have two boys who are intent on keeping me young! We enjoy going to the beach, where they surf, and we also make frequent trips to Arizona and the Colorado River where we wake surf. In the winter, we also try to make a few trips to the Glamis sand dunes to ride quads. Overall, I love spending time with my family and focusing on leading a healthy lifestyle.
