Helping companies comply with PED requirements

PED 2014/68/EU

PED 2014/68/EUThe Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU applies to manufacturers selling pressure equipment in the European Union with a maximum allowable pressure above 7.25 psig or 0.5 bar. It establishes requirements for design, manufacturing, and conformity assessment.

The PED scope includes pressure vessels and accessories, steam boilers, piping, safety accessories, and assemblies. Steel mills, who supply materials to the vessel manufacturers, also need to comply with the PED 2014/68/EU Annex I section 4.3.

Manufacturers must comply with the PED before they can obtain the CE Marking or UKCA Marking. To comply with the PED, companies’ conformity assessments must be certified by a Notified Body. The conformity assessment procedure provides inspection and quality assessments, depending on the environmental impact and level of risk if equipment failure should occur.

Benefits of complying with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU:

  • Gain access to the EU pressure equipment market.
  • Increase revenue potential.
  • Avoid nonconformities that may lead to legal ramifications.
  • Ensure pressure equipment meets safety requirements.

Conformity Assessment
As an accredited Notified Body for Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH (0036), through TÜV SÜD, can conduct conformity assessments to ensure that companies obtain certification for their pressure vessel equipment. Pressure equipment category determines the procedure or procedures performed during a conformity assessment.

Steps to a conformity assessment:

  1. Determine the fluid group.
  2. Assess the size of the pressure equipment. Volume for vessels or nominal diameter for pipes and pipework.
  3. Establish the risk category.
  4. Determine the conformity module you wish to follow, depending on your production needs.
