• A functional environmental management system must be in place.

The cost of ISO 14001 certification depends on several factors, such as the size of the organization and the number of sites. Costs typically start in the low four‑figure range, making certification a relatively modest investment when implementing an environmental management system. 

ISO 14001 certification is generally voluntary and aimed at organizations of all sizes and sectors that wish to improve their environmental management. 

However, in certain cases certification may become mandatory, for example due to requirements set by authorities or conditions in public procurement procedures. In sensitive industries such as chemicals or pharmaceuticals, legal obligations to implement a certified environmental management system may apply.
