Many active programs continue to reference MIL-STD-461G or earlier versions, and testing must be performed against the revision specified in your contract or procurement documentation.
The transition from MIL-STD-461G to MIL-STD-461H involves more than editorial updates. The latest revision introduces additional requirements related to equipment under test (EUT) cabling and power configurations, along with significantly expanded expectations for the EMI Test Procedure (EMITP) that supports each test campaign.
These changes represent a substantial update to the standard and bring documentation requirements closer to those used for DEF STAN 59-411 programs in the UK. As a result, early planning and a well-defined test strategy are more important than ever.

RTCA DO-160 defines environmental conditions and test procedures for airborne equipment used in civil aviation. MIL-STD-461 focuses specifically on EMC and EMI requirements for aerospace and defense equipment, including emissions and susceptibility testing. Depending on your application, products may need to meet one or both standards.
Power lines, often referred to as power ports in commercial EMC terminology, are tested for EMC performance under MIL-STD-461. However, power supply effects such as voltage variations, dropouts, and overvoltage events are covered by separate standards, depending on the application:
- MIL STD 704 for Air Service
- MIL STD 1399 for Sea Service
- MIL STD 1275 for Land Service
