On 27 March 2018, The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published notice of availability (NOA)1 requesting comments on draft guidelines2 for determining age appropriateness of toys. The consultation period is now opened for 75 days until 11 June 2018.
The Commission is seeking comments specifically on recommended age groups3 for all toys that have been added to or changed in the draft revised document since the last update in 20024, and on the research methodology and analyses performed in the study5. The results of these age determinations directly impact the type and severity of tests of the sample that may subsequently undergo in order to identify potential hazards. It helps the industry better determining and labelling the appropriate age group for their toys to prevent injuries for target users.
The guidance document is intended for CPSC staff, industry stakeholders, third party testing laboratories, and manufacturers in the toy sector. The draft guidance does not apply to all products, but can be tailored to meet the needs of particular toys.
