EU REACH: Public consultation of the 19th update of the Candidate List launched

On 8 March 2018, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a 45-days public consultation for the 19^th update of the REACH Candidate List¹. The public consultation will end on 23 April 2018.

Eight (8) substances were proposed. If all of the proposed substances are identified as substances of very high concern (SVHCs), the total number of SVHCs listed on the Candidate List will increase from 181 to 189 in July 2018.

Table A gives the substance names, identification numbers (CAS and EC), the reason(s) for proposing and their potential application(s).

Disodium octaborate	12008-41-2 (234-541-0)	Toxic for reproduction (Article 57c)	Used in micronutrient fertilisers and construction materials; Used in production of frits; Used in use of paints and coatings, of cellulose insulation, and of cement.
Dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6)	540-97-6 (208-762-8)	PBT (Article 57d); vPvB (Article 57e)	Use as a monomer in the production of polysiloxane polymers and resins; Used in cosmetic products, household products: washing and cleaning, polishes and waxes.
Ethylenediamine	107-15-3 (203-468-6)	Respiratory sensitising properties (Article 57(f) - human health)	Used as monomer in epoxy, PU, adhesives, coatings and other polymers.
Lead	7439-92-1 (231-100-4)	Toxic for reproduction (Article 57c)	Used in lead-acid batteries and in lead sheets used in the building sector; Used as shots and bullets for ammunition and for alloying steel; Used in soldering alloys, cable sheathing; Used for the production of oxides, pigments, stabilisers and other lead compounds.
Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4)	556-67-2 (209-136-7)	PBT (Article 57d); vPvB (Article 57e)	Used as a feedstock for the production of silicone polymers; Used in washing and cleaning products, cosmetics, personal care products, polishes and waxes.
Terphenyl hydrogenated	61788-32-7 (262-967-7)	vPvB (Article 57e)	Used as additive in plastic applications; Used in formulation of coatings/inks, adhesives and sealants.
