On 16 October 2019, the European Commission (EC) has published the reference1 of EN 71-3:2019 on the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), approving the standard as a harmonised standard under Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. Toys conform with this standard are presumed to be in conformity with the essential safety requirement set out in the Directive.
The adoption of new harmonised standard EN 71-3:2019 replaces the current standard EN 71-3:2013+A3:2018, allowing a transition period of withdrawal until 15 April 2020.
This newly harmonised standard EN 71-3:20192 on migration of elements was published in April this year. Compared to the old standard, this revision improved measurement of chromium VI and of organic tin compounds, better controlled experimental conditions when carrying out the tests, and an improved structure of standard EN 71-3 to ease the practical application.
