USA: California Proposition 65 first case on BPA in socks is settled

AUGUST 2022 - SOFTLINES

On 22 August 2022, one California Proposition 65 (Prop 65) judgement has been reached for bisphenol A (BPA) in socks. This is the first case for socks containing BPA.

Prop 65 is a “right to know” act. The law requires businesses with 10 or more employees to provide a clear and reasonable warning before knowingly and intentionally exposing Californians to listed chemicals. Currently, the Prop 65 list has more than 900 chemicals1. From last year, a number of Prop 65 notifications are related to BPA in the socks made primarily of polyester with spandex. The Prop 65 warning is not provided when the socks containing BPA are sold. Now, the first case on BPA in socks is settled.

Below table summarised for the judgement for socks containing BPA.
