Vietnam: Circular No. 01/2025/TT-BKHCN Updates Regulations to Enable 6 GHz Band Usage for License-Exempt Devices
APRIL 2025 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS
Effective on May 15, 2025
On 31 March 2025, the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications issued Circular No. 01/2025/TT-BKHCN, amending Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BTTTT on license-exempt radio equipment, technical specifications, and operational conditions. The revision addresses the growing demand for advanced Wi-Fi technologies, including Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, which require access to the 6 GHz frequency band (5925–7125 MHz). Previously, Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BTTTT restricted Wi-Fi usage to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and mandated that users disable 6 GHz-capable features.
Key Amendments:
1. New Frequency Allocation:
- Adds 500 MHz within the 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) for Wi-Fi applications, aligning with global standards to enhance connectivity speeds and reduce network congestion.
- Supports advanced Wi-Fi protocols (e.g., Wi-Fi 6E) enabling sub-channels up to 160 MHz bandwidth and theoretical speeds of 9.6 Gb/s.
2. Emission Power Limits:
- Indoor use: Maximum Equivalent Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP) of 200 mW.
- Outdoor use: Maximum EIRP of 25 mW.
- These limits aim to prevent interference with licensed systems operating in adjacent frequency ranges.
Implementation:
The updated regulations take effect on 15 May 2025. Devices compliant with the new technical standards will no longer require users to disable 6 GHz band functionality. This amendment aims to modernize Vietnam’s wireless infrastructure, improve user experience, and foster compatibility with next-generation Wi-Fi technologies.
