The current version of the standard is ISO 9001:2015. However, ISO is working intensively to revise ISO 9001, aligning the standard with newer legal requirements and ensuring that it reflects the evolving needs of organisations and the global economy more accurately.
Due to the extensive feedback from stakeholders on the first draft – the so-called Committee Draft – and the need for further discussion, a revision by the Working Group became necessary. ISO 9001 is therefore expected to come into force in 2026. The anticipated changes are intended to improve compatibility with other standards, and climate protection is also set to play a greater role.
A general introduction to ISO 9001
Definition: what is ISO 9001?
This quality management standard focuses on meeting customer expectations for product or service quality. A key pillar of ISO 9001 is the process-oriented approach, which ensures that all essential processes are aligned. A QMS documents and reviews these processes regularly. Even well-performing organisations can identify new opportunities for optimisation, saving costs, reducing risks and improving customer satisfaction.
What are the benefits of ISO 9001 certification?
Introducing a QMS in accordance with ISO 9001 offers many advantages. For example, it enables companies to:
- increase transparency of their processes
- improve customer satisfaction sustainably
- significantly reduce errors, risks and associated costs
However, the true significance of ISO 9001 certification goes further. Many clients or business partners require proof of systematic quality management – clear processes, quality and customer focus – from their suppliers or service providers. ISO 9001 certificates are recognised worldwide and serve as such proof.
Customers and employees also respond positively to a certificate issued by a reputable organisation. It communicates immediately that the company works to international standards with a clear customer focus and continuously improves its processes.
What are the seven principles of ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is based on seven quality management principles, the aim of which is to continuously improve the overall performance of organisations:
- Customer focus: Understanding customer needs and striving to exceed expectations
- Leadership: Aligning the organisation with market expectations and creating an environment where employees contribute to achieving objectives
- Relationship management: Building strong relationships with stakeholders such as suppliers to ensure sustainable success
- Involvement of people: Recognising and enabling employees at all levels so they can contribute their strengths
- Improvement: Continuously analysing and improving overall performance
- Process-oriented approach: Ensuring all activities and resources interact efficiently
- Evidence-based decision making: Using data and analysis to understand cause–effect relationships and implement effective measures
Who must be certified to ISO 9001?
An ISO 9001 certificate provides objective proof of systematic quality management. It is highly regarded in business and is often a prerequisite for establishing business relationships.
How to get ISO 9001 certification?
While Chapters 1 to 3 offer introductory information, Chapters 4 to 10 specify the requirements for implementing a QMS and achieving ISO 9001 certification:
- Context of the organisation (Chapter 4)
- Leadership (Chapter 5)
- Planning (Chapter 6)
- Support (Chapter 7)
- Operation (Chapter 8)
- Performance evaluation (Chapter 9)
- Improvement (Chapter 10)
Once all requirements are fulfilled, the ISO 9001 quality management system is implemented, all documents and evidence are available, internal audits and management reviews are completed, a certification by TÜV SÜD is possible.
Which versions of ISO 9001 exist?
What role does sustainability play in ISO 9001?
Such risks must now be addressed systematically; organisations must ensure resilience. To this end, ISO has incorporated amendments (AMD 1:2024-02) into the Harmonised Structure (HS), which are valid without a revision of the standard. They are, therefore, already assessed in ISO 9001 audits today.

Who is permitted to certify ISO 9001?
Important: a certification body may not audit itself.
How do ISO 9001 audits work?
- Stage 1 Audit: Review of documentation, completeness of QMS information and evaluation of readiness for Stage 2.
- Stage 2 Audit: Review of the effective implementation of the QMS in practice, including employee interviews, visits to the site and process reviews such as order processing, supplier management and error and complaint handling.
Afterwards, the company receives the audit report and, if successful, the certificate. Any major non-conformities must be corrected before certification can be granted.
How long does the entire ISO 9001 process take, from assessment to certification?
What are the key points to bear in mind during the initial certification process?
- Strong commitment from leadership
- Establishment of a project team
- Emphasis on risk-based thinking, customer and process focus, and continuous improvement
- Availability of documents and evidence during the audit (e.g. objectives, internal audit results, management review)
ISO 9001 is about establishing a QMS that is genuinely implemented within the organisation. The staff must be familiar with the processes, as well as their responsibilities and the quality targets, and be able to implement them in their day-to-day work.
How long is the certificate valid for?
How much does ISO 9001 certification cost?
Costs depend on multiple factors, such as:
- Company size (number of staff and locations)
- Scope of certification
- Applicable or excluded requirements
- Existing certifications that may influence audit time
