IECEE CB scheme

Checklist

What is the IECEE CB scheme?

The IEC System for Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components Certification Body scheme (IECEE CB scheme) is the world’s first international system for the mutual acceptance of product safety test reports and certificates. It covers electrical and electronic equipment, devices, and components.

This multilateral certification system is based on internationally recognised IEC product safety standards. The CB report and certificate scheme relies on a global network of testing laboratories (CBTLs), which are responsible for testing products to applicable technical standards. Product test results are then submitted to national certification bodies (NCBs) in CB Scheme member countries, who can authorise legal access to CBTL-tested products without additional testing.

Why the IECEE CB scheme is important

Accessed and accepted across international markets, the primary benefit of the IECEE CB scheme is that it enables access to the markets of all participating member states through a single testing and certification process.

There are more than 50 IECEE CB scheme member countries around the world, including European Union (EU) Member States, the U.S., China, India, Korea, and Russia. As manufacturers can access every IECEE CB scheme member country, this avoids expensive and duplicate testing. IECEE CB scheme applicants are often given priority consideration by NCBs as no additional testing is required, helping accelerate time to market.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the steps involved to get CB Scheme certification?
Three simple steps:

1. The manufacturer applies to a National Certification Body (NCB), such as TÜV SÜD, for a CB test certificate.
2. The NCB works with authorised CB testing laboratories (CBTLs) to determine if the product satisfies IECEE requirements.
3. A CB report and certificate is issued if the product complies. The CBTL issues a CB test report and the NCB issues a CB test certificate to the manufacturer.
What standards does the CB Scheme cover?
The CB Scheme is based on international IEC standards. You may visit the page for a complete list of standards operated by the IECEE CB Scheme.
What products does the CB Scheme cover?
The IECEE CB scheme addresses the safety, quality, efficiency, and overall performance of components, devices, and equipment for homes, offices, workshops, health facilities etc. In all, it covers 23 categories of electrical and electronic equipment:

• IT and office equipment.
• Electronics, entertainment.
• Household and similar equipment.
• Batteries.
• Lighting.
• Electrical equipment for medical use.
• Measurement, control, and laboratory equipment.
• Electromagnetic compatibility.
• Safety transformers and similar equipment.
• Portable tools.
• Miscellaneous.
• Installation accessories and connection devices.
• Switches for appliances and automatic controls for electrical household appliances.
• Photovoltaics.
• Installation protective equipment.
• Low voltage, high power switching equipment.
• Cables and cords.
• Industrial automation.
• Electrical vehicle.
• Capacitors as components.
• Energy efficiency.
• Hazardous substances.
• Electric toys.
What is the difference between CE marking and the IECEE CB test certificate?
There is no comparison between CE marking and a CB test certificate. CB test certificates are issued based on third-party sample testing against a published IEC standard. The CE marking is a regulatory marking to enter the European Union market and constitutes a declaration by the manufacturer that the product complies with the essential requirements as set in the directives.
Does the CB scheme have its own product mark or symbol
The CB scheme does not have its own product mark or symbol.
How can you tell if the electrical product is CB scheme certified?
You may search for the certified model from https://certificates.iecee.org/#/home
How long is a CB scheme certification valid?
CB test certificates do not have an expiry date.
How can I apply for CB scheme certification?
A manufacturer can request / apply to an NCB such as TÜV SÜD for a new CB test certificate.
