SEC (Superintendence of Electricity and Combustible Fuels) is the government authority regulating electrical and gas appliances in the mandatory national certification scheme that covers both safety and energy efficiency. All products in the scope are required to get SEC approval before market commercialization. There are several modes of certification.
SEC type approval - No expiry date unless there are changes to the products
- Household appliance.

- Lighting.
- Electric cables.
- Information technology equipment and audio video.
- Hand-held motor-operated electric tools.
- Portable heating tools and similar appliances.
- Measuring instruments.
- Rotating electrical machines .
SEC EE Certificate - 1 year validity
- Air conditioner.

- Dishwasher.
- Cloth dryer.
- Washing machine.
- Television and set top box.
- Refrigerator, freezer.
- Ballast for fluorescent lamp.
- Incandescent and fluorescent lamp.
- LED lamp.
- Standby for audio video, lighting, micro stereos.
- Electric motor.

SEC Certification process
The procedure described below applies to all manufacturers outside of Chile:
5 steps to SEC certification (System 1, Code 12):
- Product type testing by TÜV SÜD (full test).
- Technical analysis of the submitted technical documentation.
- Type certificate issued to Chilean importer.
- Batch verification test done in SEC accredited lab (partial test).
- Batch certification and QR code approval to be issued to Chilean importer.
5 steps to SEC certification (System 2, Code 22):
- Product type testing by TÜV SÜD (full test).
- Factory initial inspection.
- Market/ factory sample picking and verification testing (partial) done per half yearly.
- Type certificate and QR code approval issued to Chilean importer.
- Test certificate issued to importer.
Basic application requirements
Various requirements need to be met throughout the application process. First and foremost, the IEC test report must be issued within one year of the application for SEC, the required testing needs to be conducted in an ISO 17025 certified laboratory, shipment inspection is not required, and finally, the rating label must include:
- Production date (month/year).
- Serial number.
- Safety warning (if applicable).
- Country of manufacture.
- SEC approval certificate number (not applicable for reduced testing).
- SEC QR code.
- Energy efficiency approval certificate (if applicable)
