In the last few decades there has been a trend for populations to shift from rural to urban areas. This increase in urbanisation made it necessary to rethink how urban areas need to be structured.

One of the bigger issues highly dense populations face is the food supply, especially where space is an issue. With more and more people living in urban centres and food security becoming a perennial concern, producers and suppliers can’t afford to ignore this trend. Recent technological developments and price drops of key equipment lead to an increased interest in indoor farming. In particular, lighting plays a key role in urban farming since it is one of the major parameters needed in plant development. Dr. Marvin Böll has a background in electrical engineering, with a specialisation in lighting technologies. Marvin joined the TÜV SÜD Group in 2016 and is responsible for the support of lighting related projects with a focus on grow lights, and to provide customer advice and education on light, lighting technologies and applications. Prior to joining Marvin worked in Research and Development for General lighting applications.
