India: Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2024 Issued

On September 20, 2024, the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued the Safety of Household, Commercial, and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order of 2024.
This order applies to all electrical appliances designed for household, commercial, or similar uses with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V for single-phase alternating current or 415V for three-phase alternating current, and that are not governed by any other quality control order issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act.
The use of the Standard Mark is mandatory. The goods or articles listed in column (2) of the table must comply with the corresponding Indian Standards specified in column (3). It must also bear the Standard Mark, licensed by the Bureau, according to Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
- General implementation date is six months from publication - 17 March 2025
- Implementation date for small enterprises is Nine months from publication – 17 June 2025
- Implementation date for micro enterprises is Twelve months from publication – 17 Sep 2025
Please note that all foreign manufacturers are subject to the general implementation date. Small or Micro enterprises are only applicable to manufacturers located in India.
Additionally, this order does not apply to 200 units of goods or articles imported annually by manufacturers of household and similar electrical appliances for research and development purposes. These imports are not to be sold commercially and are to be disposed of as scrap. Manufacturers must maintain yearly records of these goods and present them to the Central Government if requested.
The order is effective as of September 20, 2024.
