Korea: Revision of Korean Industrial Standards (KS) for Certain Batteries

On October 11, 2024, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) released Notice No. 2024-0411 concerning the update of Korean Industrial Standards for specific types of batteries, in adherence to the Industrial Standardization Act and its Enforcement Decree.

The Notice details amendments to 14 standards, encompassing citations, terminology, formatting adjustments, and typo rectifications, to harmonize them with international benchmarks. The revised standards include:

  • KSCIEC61959: Mechanical Testing of Portable Sealed Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries Containing Alkaline or Other Non-Acidic Electrolytes
  • KSCIEC61427-1: General Requirements and Testing Methods for Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries for Renewable Energy Storage – Part 1: Stand-alone Photovoltaic Power Systems
  • KSRIEC60254-2: Lead-acid Batteries for Propulsion – Part 2: Dimensions of Cells and Terminals, and Polarity Marking on Cells
  • KSRIEC60254-1: Lead-acid Batteries for Propulsion – Part 1: General Requirements and Testing Methods
  • KSE6008: Lead-acid Batteries for Electric Vehicles
  • KSCIECTS61430: Performance Testing Methods for Devices Designed to Reduce Explosion Hazards in Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries – Starting Lead-acid Batteries
  • KSCIEC61951-1: Sealed Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries for Portable Devices Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes – Part 1: Nickel-Cadmium
  • KSCIEC60622: Cylindrical Sealed Nickel-Cadmium Rechargeable Single Cells Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes
  • KSC8519: Small Sealed Lead-acid Batteries
  • KSC8511: Lead-acid Batteries for Automobiles
  • KSC8510: Lead-acid Batteries for Motorcycles
  • KSC8505: Stationary Lead-acid Batteries
  • KSCIEC62620: Lithium Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries Used for Industrial Applications Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes
  • KSCIEC62281: Safety for the Transport of Lithium Primary and Secondary Battery Cells and Batteries

This Notice became effective immediately upon its release on October 11, 2024.
