Meet our Team

Juan Portillo, Technical Director, Spain
“I work with my team and external partners such as the government to develop and implement procedures for inspecting road vehicles. It is our responsibility to foresee and detect vehicle defects and avoid accidents and environmental damage. Also, as the technology within cars gradually advances, we must come up with new inspection procedures. I genuinely feel that in some way, we save lives, and this inspires me to work harder and better.”

Autonomous Driving with PEGASUS

Autonomous Driving with PEGASUS
Autonomous vehicles are heading for our roads, so new quality standards and methods must be developed to approve and authorise their safety. This is what Germany’s project PEGASUS stood for: "Project to Establish Generally Accepted quality criteria, tools and methods as well as Scenarios and Situations for the approval of highly automated driving functions".
TÜV SÜD, as the only testing organisation on the project, aimed to develop a procedure for testing automated driving functions to enable the rapid introduction of automated driving for everyday use from 2016 to 2019.
We had a number of primary goals. Firstly, we wanted to define a uniform procedure for testing and validating automated vehicle systems in simulation, on proving grounds and in real world conditions. TÜV SÜD was able to develop a continuous and flexible testing tool chain to make automated driving safe and secure, among other things.

Overhauling Road Safety in Turkey

Overhauling Road Safety in Turkey
Turkey was experiencing high vehicle accident and fatality rates. Something big had to change to make mobility and the streets safer for Turkish residents, so we set out to create a new, modern system of vehicle inspection. As a joint venture of TÜV SÜD and Turkish and British companies Dogus Group and Bridgepoint, we created TÜVTÜRK to tackle the task.
Based on our German model, TÜVTÜRK succeeded in creating a complete periodical technical inspection system that is customised to local needs. We set up an inspection-centre network, technical operation, recruitment and training, IT infrastructure, a business partner network, accreditation, and a public awareness programme. We obtained the rights for the establishment, maintenance and operation of vehicle inspection stations in Turkey for 20 years under a concession contract awarded by the Privatization Administration of Turkey.
The results speak for themselves. Now, we carry out over ten million inspections each year and Turkey has seen a 40% drop in road casualties. Since beginning operations, 90.8 million periodical inspections, 29.6 million exhaust emission tests, and 330,000 roadworthiness inspections have been conducted by us. According to an independent study, the first year of implementation saw a reduction of 82,925 accidents, and since the beginning, 2,700 fatalities have been avoided.

Our New Mobility Centre in Germany

Our New Mobility Centre in Germany
After two years of construction and an investment of over 20 million euros, we opened our new Mobility and Drive Centre in Heimsheim, Germany on 29th September 2020. The new, state-of-the-art emissions-testing site is the largest independent laboratory of its kind in Europe, and with it, we doubled our testing capacity for tomorrow's vehicles.
Our new testing facility provides a full range of emissions tests for all types of powertrains, such as combustion engines, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. We also do type approval according to international standards and regulations. With our global laboratory network for emissions tests, we are well prepared to support the future of mobility and accelerate the homologation process for vehicles in international markets.
At this new facility, we can test all vehicles in terms of emissions and environmental capability, from diesel, to petrol, to hybrid, to pure electric. In our laboratory we are able to conduct various tests along the entire vehicle life cycle – from development to certification and verification during use, even under temperatures of -7°C. This means we offer car manufacturers a single point of contact and deliver all test results centrally in Heimsheim, speeding up the vehicle homologation process and global market access. We can even perform a special test level for commercial vehicles and prototype areas according to TISAX regulation.
