What is the Radio Equipment Directive (EU RED Directive)?

Introduced under Directive 2014/53/EU, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED)—also known as the EU RED Directive establishes manufacturing standards for radio products relating to their health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and efficient use of the radio spectrum. As an EU Notified Body, TÜV SÜD is authorized to assess products for full compliance with the Radio Equipment Directive and to issue the required RED Certification.

Once our experts certify a product, manufacturers and distributors of the radio equipment will affix a RED CE mark to their products, demonstrating conformity with Directive 2014/53/EU and enabling access to the EU market.

Why is radio equipment directive important?

RED Certification ensures full compliance with the EU RED Directive and is essential for any manufacturer or distributor placing radio equipment on the EU or EEA market. The scope of the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) includes a wide range of wireless and radio-based technologies, from broadcast radios and television receivers to garage door openers and residential monitoring systems. To legally sell these products manufacturers and distributors must ensure that their product displays a CE mark. Failure to do so may result in fines, products being banned and recalled.
