Certification mark for upholstered furniture
The certification mark applies to upholstered furniture such as sofas and armchairs.
Basis of certification:
The test procedure developed by TÜV SÜD is based on the EN 1021-1 (Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 1: Ignition source smouldering cigarette ) and the EN 1021-2 (Furniture – Assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture – Part 2: Ignition source match flame equivalent) standards. The standard investigates the reaction of materials to a burning cigarette and a butane flame.
Key words of the certification mark:
The European standard EN 1021-1 includes definition of test methods to determine the ignitability of material combinations such as the covers and filling of upholstered furniture. A burning cigarette serves as the source of ignition.
The European standard EN 1021-2 among other things defines test methods to determine the ignitability of material combinations such as the covers and filling of upholstered furniture. A “small flame” representing a burning match serves as the source of ignition.

The products certified by TÜV SÜD Product Service underwent these standard tests with a positive result. This means hazardous smouldering or burning of the tested product are excluded according to these Standards.
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
Periodic surveillance of the manufacturer of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification that includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.
As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and finished product testing.
In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, certificate validity will expire and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
