About IBR 1950 Regulation

Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR) are a set of standards that regulate the materials, design and construction, inspection and testing of boilers and boiler components for compliance by the manufacturers and users of boilers in India. These regulations were developed by the Central Boilers Board which also regularly reviews and updates the standard to align with changing boiler technology.

Any material manufacturer or component manufacturer of boilers, boiler piping, mountings, fittings, and valves for use in India must comply with the Indian Boiler Regulation 1950 or IBR. Since the IBR is strictly enforced by the Indian government, no material or equipment can be imported into India unless it is accompanied by by a certificate that confirms that all imports meet the IBR. This certificate must be endorsed by an Inspecting Authority designated by the Indian Government.

TUV SUD ARISE, through it’s affiliation with ABIIC, is recognized by the Central Boilers Board in India as an Inspecting Authority and Competent Authority. TÜV SÜD has inspectors stationed in the U.S. and a global network of IBR inspectors for coverage where materials and pressure equipment may be sourced. IBR services includes but not limited to:

  • Inspection, testing, and certification of pipes (Form III-A)
  • Design review and approval of fittings and valves (Form III-C)
  • Inspection, testing, and certification of materials (Form IV-A)
  • Witnessing of tests required by the Indian Boiler Regulation 1950, or the Code approved by the Central Boilers Board for specific products, for IBR purposes only
