About the Pressure Equipment Directive

The European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU provides mandatory guidance for the design, manufacturing and conformity assessment of pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar or 7.25 psig. Compliance with this Directive is required for designers and manufacturers looking to sell their equipment to the EU. Pressure equipment that is covered by the PED includes pressure vessels, pressure accessories, piping, steam boilers, safety accessories and assemblies.

Updates to the PED

Pressure equipment manufacturers, suppliers and project owners need to be aware of many regulations, standards and building codes. Compliance is required to bear the CE marking. The new Directive was published in the Official Journal of the European Union L 189 on 27 June 2014 and replaces the old PED 97/23/EC.

Important aspects of the law with regards to the changes:

  • Products placed or made available on the European Market
  • Fair competition on the Union market
  • Roles and responsibilities are defined
  • Enforcement and market surveillance

PED 2014/68/EU Conformity Assessment

The conformity assessment procedure provides inspection and quality assessments depending on the environmental impact and level of risk if equipment failure should occur. Steps include:

  • Examine fluid groups to examine dangerous fluids (such as explosive, toxic, and highly flammable fluids) in contrast with benign fluids
  • Examine and assess the stored energy in a vessel, or pressure and nominal diameter for pipes and pipework
  • Determine risk category
  • Choose a conformity module that is appropriate to meet the requirements of the situation and equipment

The Importance of a Notified Body

In order to achieve compliance with PED 2014/68/EU, the pressure equipment conformity assessment must be certified by a Notified Body, which will partner with you to achieve accreditation and meet production deadlines and schedules.
