GMW3172 testing for E/E components – environmental/durability
Meet GM GMW3172 requirements with environmental and durability testing for automotive electrical and electronic components. What is General Motors (GM) GMW3172 standard?
General Motors (GM) GMW3172 standard applies to electrical/electronic (E/E) components for passenger or commercial vehicles and trucks. The standard describes the environmental and durability tests for E/E components based on mounting location.
GMW3172 specifies environmental/durability requirements and analytical/development/validation (A/D/V) activities for electrical/electronic components that are used in a vehicle environment to ensure reliability over a lifetime.

TÜV SÜD’s automotive Environmental and EMC labs are accredited to ISO 17025 and can help ensure your automotive electrical/electronic component, sub-assembly or systems comply with global OEM and industry standards.
The testing phases of GMW3172
Analysis
The earliest of the phases involves component design and improvement. This phase should be use to design reliability and robustness into the component.
Development
These actives are performed on the first samples to provide a qualitative evaluation of the samples and improve the initial design.
Design validation (DV)
This phase is meant to provide a quantitative and qualitative verification of the component design. It should include environmental, durability and reliability actives on production intent designs and materials.
Product validation (PV)
This phase is meant to provide a quantitative and qualitative verification of environmental, durability and reliability actives on samples made on production tooling and manufacturing process.
Testing for the phases are completed in multiple test legs that encompass initial sample inspection and functional checks, electrical and EMC testing, environmental testing, corrosion, vibration and other mechanical testing. No matter which phase or test leg your component is in, TÜV SÜD can support it!
