There is an increasing demand for flow meters to be calibrated for use at elevated pressures and temperatures. This requirement is prevalent in a range of industries. Produced oil from a reservoir can differ considerably from standard calibration laboratory conditions. The standard practice for calibrating flow meters for the oil & gas industry has been to match the fluid viscosity and, if possible, the fluid temperature and pressure. Previously matching all parameters was seldom possible due to the limitations set by the calibration facilities operating range and test fluids.

Furthermore, in Issue 9 of its Guidance Notes for Petroleum Measurement under the Petroleum (Production) Regulations 2014, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) have stipulated that temperature and pressure compensation applied to any meter between its calibration conditions and its operating conditions must be “agreed in advance with NSTA” and must be “traceable and auditable”.

To meet industry requirements, TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory has established a low measurement uncertainty flow facility that is traceable and closely matched to process conditions in the field. This new facility can operate across a range of temperature, pressure, flow and viscosity conditions.

Elevated Pressure and Temperature Calibration

The loop is a unique, purpose-built flow meter calibration and evaluation facility. The facility has two separate flow lines, covering a wide range of flowrates in different line sizes. The test sections can be constructed to offer long straight lengths upstream or, if necessary, specific configurations designed to replicate actual installations.

The EPAT facility is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory is a UKAS accredited calibration laboratory (No. 0009).
