JANUARY 2025 - ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS
On August 25, 2023, the Saudi Organization for Standardization, Metrology, and Quality (SASO) issued Decision No. 1/193/2023, introducing a common charging solution (USB Type-C) for a wide range of radio and information technology devices.
This decision is intended to enhance user experience, control additional expenses, provide high-quality charging and data transfer technology, and foster sustainability by minimizing electronic waste. The implementation will occur in two phases:
- Starting January 1, 2025, all mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, handheld video game consoles, headphones, earbuds, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, wireless routers, speakers, and portable speakers must adhere to the new requirement.
- From April 1, 2026, laptops will also be subject to the unified charger mandate.
Additionally, the decision outlines labeling requirements, including instructions for charging devices and information on the supported minimum and maximum power. Furthermore, the following mandatory standards, updated to their 2023 versions, will be enforceable starting January 1, 2025:
- SASO IEC 62680-1-2, Universal serial bus interfaces for data and power - Part 1-2: Common components - USB Power Delivery specification,
- SASO IEC 62680-1-3, Universal serial bus interfaces for data and power - Part 1-3: Common components - USB Type-C cable and connector specification.
