JULY 2024 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS, HARDLINES, SOFTLINES, TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS
The European Commission has launched a public consultation1 on a proposal to include dechlorane plus (DP) in Annex I of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation. The consultation period is open for comments until 27 July 2024. The proposal outlines requirements to be applied starting in 2025, providing sufficient time for industries to find suitable alternatives.
DP is a polychlorinated flame retardant used in various applications, including textiles, electronics, cables, vehicles, and medical devices. It may also be present in some polymers like nylon and thermoplastics. In 2023, the Stockholm Convention classified DP as a POP due to its potential for significant adverse effects on human health and the environment. The European Union is a party to the Stockholm Convention, which obligates member states to implement national legislation to restrict or eliminate POPs. This proposal represents the EU's effort to fulfill its commitment under the Convention. Table A lists the requirement of the proposal.
