BSMI Certification Scheme - Taiwan

Access to Taiwan

About BSMI Certification

Most products entering Taiwan must meet strict product safety requirements and regulations. This can present challenges to businesses importing into this market, especially for those entering it for the first time. Consumer products, including electrical and electronic devices, as well as agricultural, industrial and mining commodities, must be proven to comply with Taiwan’s inspection requirements before they are shipped out of the manufacturing premises, are imported, or placed on the market. Certification applicants must also be a registered company in Taiwan.

The Taiwan Commodity Inspection Schemes (TCI Schemes) are administered by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), which is the authority responsible for standardization, metrology and product inspection in Taiwan. The BSMI Safety Mark is mandatory for electrical and electronic products under the Commodity Inspection Act. Testing must be done by BSMI or designated test laboratories, such as TÜV SÜD. The inspection of electrical and electronic commodities is conducted according to three schemes:

  • Type Approved Batch Inspection (TABI) - mechanical, chemical, electrical and electronic products (valid for three years).
  • Registration of Product Certification (RPC) - for electrical and electronic products (valid for three years).
  • Declaration of Conformity (DOC) - for components of IT equipment and electronic products (no expiry).

The BSMI mark is a mandatory requirement, and without it you cannot legally export to Taiwan, a market which offers exciting revenue opportunities for overseas manufacturers. Having a product certified by a designated Certification Body, such as TÜV SÜD, provides assurance that it is in compliance with BSMI requirements and will not be impounded at port of entry.
