Alternative Fuel Technologies (CNG/H2)

Drive the push for cleaner fuel sources

The rising cost of traditional automotive fuels and the push for environmentally cleaner technologies have been favoring alternative fuel technologies. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Hydrogen (H2) are emerging as strong and viable alternatives to traditional fuels.

These technologies require the development, testing and certification of all specific components or systems capable of safely handling the fuels in various vehicular applications to extreme ambient conditions.

TÜV SÜD America’s Industrial Technical Inspection Services group holds all necessary accreditations, through TÜV SÜD & TÜV SÜD America, for type approval and certification in accordance with all relevant national and international regulations.

Within the scope of type approvals, we test vehicles and components according to a range of regulations, including:

  • UN/ECE-R134 /GTR No.13, EC79/2009 & 406/2010/EU, HPRD1, HGV2, HGV3.1, SAE J2601 for hydrogen
  • UN/ECE-R110, UN/ECE-R115, ISO 14469, ISO 15500, PRD1, NGV1, NGV2, NGV3.1, NGV4.2, NGV4.4 for natural gas
  • UN/ECE-R67, UN/ECE-R115 for liquefied petroleum gas

TÜV SÜD America can provide a variety of engineering and testing services that will support alternative fuel technologies manufacturers, but not limited to:

  • Component and system qualification
  • Design and production consultancy
  • Safety and system analyses
  • Evaluation of hazard sources and possible failure mechanisms
  • Reliability analyses
  • Lab assessment to ISO 17025
  • Manufacturer’s quality audits
  • Interaction with the European Authorities for issuance of CNG/H2 certificates
