The largest demand for lithium-ion batteries from 2020-2030 will be for electric vehicles (EV) including the classifications of the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Lithium batteries when transported or amplified by extreme temperature exposures pose an environmental risk and is both a chemical and electrical hazard. To address safety standards for lithium ion battery products, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62133- was introduced. Testing Capabilities

IEC 62133 defines the requirements and tests for secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes and the batteries made from them. The standard IEC 62133 distinguishes between nickel and lithium-ion cells and batteries. For lithium-ion cells and batteries IEC 62133 contains the following single tests:

  • 7.3.1 External Short-Circuit (cell)
  • 7.32 External Short -Circuit (battery)
  • 7.3.3 Free Fall
  • 7.3.4 Crush (cells)
  • 7.3.6 Over-Charging of battery
  • 7.3.7 Forced Discharge (cells)
  • 7.3.8 Mechanical Test (batteries)

TÜV SÜD Canada’s Abuse Testing Facility in Newmarket Ontario, about 40km north of Toronto is fully capable of handling all cell, module and pack level abuse testing. 

Other Lithium-Ion Testing Services

The second edition of IEC 62133-2:2017 has removed some of the requirements that are covered by UN/DOT 38.3 such as vibration, mechanical shock and low-pressure altitude simulation. All lithium-ion batteries are required to undergo testing to UN 38.3 prior to shipping. These test subject batteries and cells to conditions they would experience during shipping and handling, including extreme temperature conditions, shock, impact and short circuit testing to ensure the stability of batteries and cells.
