USA: CPSC rule on custom window coverings vacated

OCTOBER 2023 -  HARDLINE, TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS

As a follow-up to the Lawsuit that Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) filed on 30 November 2022 challenging the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)’s rule on Custom Window Covering¹, the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled² unanimously in favor of the WCMA’s petition for review on 12 September 2023, vacating the CPSC’s rule and remanding the matter back to the agency. As a result, CPSC could address the court's concerns and create another rule to replace this remanded one.

At this time, the existing industry standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-20183, covering both custom and stock window covering remains in effect. The standard was updated in 2022 with an effective date of 1 June 2024. The new version³ eliminates the use of free-hanging operating cords, free-hanging tilt cords, and multiple cord connectors on all custom window covering products.
