TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory is at the forefront of flow and density measurement research, with an extensive range of facilities suitable for testing needs.  As the UK’s Designated Institute for Flow Measurement, we lead the Flow Programme and associated research and development activity associated with flow and density measurement.

What is Flow Programme Research?

We conduct research through the Flow Programme to develop innovative solutions that benefit the UK’s economy and enhance its commercial infrastructure. Our research topics are aligned with two broad areas:

  • Continuing to support the oil and gas sector by offering solutions that increase the accuracy, but lower the cost of measurement, with a view to lowering the operating cost base for extraction of hydrocarbon resources.  This supports the North Sea sector by improving the economic feasibility of extraction from depleted and/or stranded reservoirs.
  • The UK’s Industrial Strategy and the transition to a clean fuels economy.

Why is Flow Programme Research Important?

The Flow Programme research projects address the priorities identified by industry and the UK Industrial Strategy in all aspects of flow metrology.  Some current projects aim to improve the measurement uncertainty of multiphase flow meters, the effective use of meter diagnostics to infer meter ‘health’ and an to improve the coverage of the standard for wet gas measurement.
