Certification mark PVC free

Scope:

This certification mark applies to electric and electronic equipment, such as large and small household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, consumer goods, lamps, electric and electronic tools, toys, leisure and sports Equipment, as well as medical devices.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. The test method developed by TÜV SÜD is based on the standards addressing the testing and evaluation of hazardous PVC plastics. Polyvinyl chloride, frequently abbreviated as PVC, ranks third after polyethylene and polypropylene as the most common synthetic polymer produced. Many plastic goods in our daily life, such as power cords and plugs, HDMI and USB cables, as well as toys, are made from polyvinyl chloride. However, PVC includes hazardous chemical substances such as phthalates, lead, cadmium and organotin, which can be toxic for the human body. Furthermore, these phthalates may also be released into the air over time, creating further human risks.

Keywords of the certification mark

  • PVC free
Products identified by the "PVC free" certification mark do not contain any hazardous PVC materials. The test method developed by TÜV SÜD covers testing for plastics and plastic materials that can include PVC, and tests the products for being 100% PVC-free.

Excluded are external cables (e.g. power cords, plugs, HDMI cables, USB cables) etc. which are not tested for electric and electronic safety.
  • Safety Tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
  • Production Monitored
Periodic surveillance and/or monitoring of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification that includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product testing. In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured.

Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorized changes are made to the product, the certificate will become invalid and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
