Certification mark for ski boots with WTR technology

Scope:

The certification mark applies to ski boots of types that range between a conventional ski boot and a touring ski boot in terms of walkability and comfort. Ski boots with WTR (Walk to Ride) technology (also known as “walk soles”) may only be used with appropriate, compatible ski bindings (also with WTR technology) or touring ski bindings.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. The test programme developed by TÜV SÜD Product Service for ski-boot testing is based on the ISO 9523 standard.

The international standard defines the measurements and properties of the interface with the ski bindings and the requirements, testing and labelling of ski boots. Testing of ski bindings is based on the ISO 9462 standard. This international standard applies to alpine ski bindings for children, young people and adults and defines the key safety requirements for ski bindings.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • ISO 9523
The TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “ISO 9523” is awarded to tested ski boots with WTR Technology.
  • ISO 9462
The TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “ISO 9462” is awarded to tested ski bindings with WTR Technology.
  • WTR technology
The certification mark with this statement is only awarded to ski boots and ski bindings equipped with special WTR technology that have been tested by TÜV SÜD Product Service.
  • Walkability
The “Walkability” statement indicates that the tested ski boot offers better and more comfortable walking. Walking in ski boots with the special WTR sole is significantly more comfortable than walking in conventional ski boots. Walkability is verified in walking tests on various surfaces.
  • Safety
In spite of the special sole for more comfortable walking, the tested ski boots are as safe as conventional ski boots when combined with the requisite associated ski binding.
  • Skiability
TÜV SÜD Product Service test the ski boots with WTR technology in a practice test, examining their suitability for downhill riding and/or their performance during skiing. The results are then compared to those of conventional ski boots and ski bindings.
  • Safety tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
  • Production monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
