Certification mark for permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment

Scope:

The certification mark applies to permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment designed for people who enjoy exercise and want to lead an active life. The equipment design should therefore encourage a wide range of physical activities, including cardiovascular, strength and muscle training as well as balance and coordination exercises and stretching.

Basis of certification:

The test procedure developed by TÜV SÜD is based on the EN 16630 European standard. This standard defines general safety requirements for the production, installation, inspection and maintenance of permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment that can be accessed by the general public.

However, it does not apply to powered equipment, equipment for functional training (typically with movable weights) and military obstacle courses.

Scope:

The certification mark applies to permanently installed unsupervised public use outdoor fitness equipment designed for people who enjoy exercise and want to lead an active life. The equipment design should therefore encourage a wide range of physical activities, including cardiovascular, strength and muscle training as well as balance and coordination exercises and stretching.

Basis of certification:

The test procedure developed by TÜV SÜD is based on the ASTM F3101 USA standard. This standard defines general safety requirements for the production, installation, inspection and maintenance of permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment that can be accessed by the general public and intended to be used by individuals aged 13 years and older. However, it does not apply to powered equipment, equipment for functional training (typically with movable weights) and military obstacle courses.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • Outdoor
The TÜV SÜD certification mark is awarded for fitness equipment installed outdoors in public areas such as parks and fitness trails etc., where no coaches/trainers are present.
  • Fitness Equipment
The TÜV SÜD certification mark is awarded for items of fitness equipment installed outdoors which are in compliance with the requirements of TÜV SÜD.
  • EN 16630
Certification is based on the European standard EN 16630 (Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment – safety requirements and test methods) (see Basis of certification).
  • ASTM F3101
Certification is based on the USA Standard ASTM F3101 (Unsupervised Public Use Outdoor Fitness Equipment) (see basis of certification).
  • Safety tested

The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.

The certification criteria vary depending on the products in question. While the Focus in the case of a hair dryer, for example, is on electrical safety, the focus in the case of a car jack is on the mechanical characteristics.

  • Production monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacturer of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification that includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and finished product testing.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, certificate validity will expire and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
