Certification mark for Office furniture

Certification mark for Office furniture

Scope:

This certification mark applies to the ergonomics of office work chairs.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is based on the EN 1335-1, -2 and -3 standards. These standards define the basic dimensions of office work chairs and the safety rules and test criteria applying to them. Compliance with ergonomic dimensions is verified with the help of a seat measurement device known as a “sedometer” and a harmonized and recognized test method based on sedometer test specifications issued by the Ergonomie Institut München (Ergonomics Institute of Munich) Dr. Heidinger, Dr. Jaspert & Dr. Hocke GmbH. The sedometer simulates a sitting person, facilitating analysis of the office work chair with respect to human-oriented measurements and movements.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • Ergonomics, Ergonomics approved
As specified in the technical documentation, the chair can be adjusted to accommodate the user's ergonomic requirements. To verify this, the test covers a range of measurements including seat adjustment options, the backrest-to-seat angle and the lumbar support. When adjusted properly, these features enable users to sit over extended periods without tiring.
  • Safety tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.

  • Production monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification that includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product testing.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
