Certification mark for aluminium transport boxes

Scope:

The certification mark applies to aluminium transport boxes and their ability to withstand the ingress of dust (dust-tight) and water in case of temporary immersion (testing of compliance with protection class rating IP67)

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. Testing is based on the EN 60529 and the PPP 53319B standard. These standards govern the basic safety regulations and test criteria for aluminium transport boxes and/or enclosures. The EN 60529 defines the requirements and test methods for the respective IP code (testing of compliance with the protection class rating).

The objective is to protect the equipment inside the enclosure/transport box from the harmful impacts of dust and water. In addition, the basic requirements set forth in DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance standard) 108-007 for the design and exterior safety of the boxes (pointed or sharp edges, points involving crushing and shearing hazards), stability, safety against falling out or down (stackability) and safety against breaking.

Key words of the certification mark:

  • IP67
The IP protection class system rates the degree of protection offered by an enclosure for electrical equipment against solids (e.g. dust) and liquids. The characteristic numeral 6 stands for “dust tight”, meaning that there will be no ingress of dust. The characteristic numeral 7 stands for “temporary immersion”, i.e. there must be no ingress of a harmful amount of water.
  • Dust Tight
Users can use the tested transport boxes to store operating equipment. The boxes simultaneously provide protection against ingress of dust to the boxes. To ensure this protection, the box is subjected to an IP classification test in a dust chamber according to Figure 2 of the EN 60529 (degrees of protection provided by enclosures).

In this test the boxes (depending on their volumes) are stored for a maximum of eight hours in the chamber with a negative pressure of 20 millibar (mbar) inside the enclosure. After the test the boxes are examined for dust Ingress.
  • Temporary immersion
Users can use the tested transport boxes to store operating equipment. The boxes simultaneously provide protection against the ingress of water inside the boxes. To ensure this protection, the boxes are subject to protection class testing using an immersion tank filled with water.

Within the scope of the test, the boxes are temporarily submerged at depths between 0.15 and 1.0 metres for a test period of 30 minutes. The depth of submersion depends on the height of the boxes. After the test the boxes are examined for water Ingress.
  • Safety tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
  • Production monitored

Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
