New training programme for light rail system operators

TÜV SÜD has launched an innovative training programme to prepare selected transport company employees who want to become operations manager of urban transportation systems (light rail, metro, cable car), by increasing their awareness of safety requirements at all levels of light rail transit (LRT) operations and educate them how to respond on unsafe events.

training for operations managerThe Training Operations Manager (TOM) programme combines comprehensive theoretical online training modules, followed by hands-on practical experience. This includes visits to established public transport companies, to gain an overview of real-world operation and maintenance approaches. This gives participants the opportunity to gain in-depth insights into the operation and maintenance of vehicles, as well as the infrastructure of LRT systems. At the end of the training course, participants must pass an examination relating to all relevant laws, regulations, and standards. Upon positive result they will receive an official certificate from the relevant authority in their country, which is valid for five years.

While the training programme is primarily aimed at candidates preparing for operation manager examinations, it is also highly relevant to a wide range of management-level participants across the rail industry spectrum, including those responsible for maintenance, operations, infrastructure, and vehicle provision. The material can also be used for training of dedicated technical experts since it contains in-depth technical knowledge on the systems and the individual subsystems.

This is because it goes far beyond technical content for operations management and follows a strong process-oriented focus against regulations.”
