Certification mark for antibacterial material
Scope:
Materials and products with Antibacterial activity performance
Antibacterial material and products have been introduced in the market and the demand for them in various applications is expected to expand in the coming years. The need for antibacterial materials and products is due to the increasing consumer’s requirements to seek prevention and protection from the negative effects caused by bacteria and to secure the quality of life.
Antibacterial material and products are designed to prevent or to mitigate the growth of bacteria, to reduce the number of bacteria or to kill the bacteria. These products show difference in viable cell count and a non-antibacterial-treated product after inoculation with incubation of bacteria.
Basis of certification (Test requirements):
The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. It demonstrates that the product has been tested and certificated by the third-party organization TÜV SÜD. The certification mark is only affixed to the products that undergone inspection by TÜV SÜD Product Service and comply with the criteria quoted below.
Key statements of the certification mark:
Escherichia coli antibacterial rate≥ 99.9%
In the test, two major steps are designed, including inoculation of bacteria and quantitative measurement of bacteria. First, specimens are exposed to test inoculum of Escherichia coli, then after incubation the colony count on Escherichia coli both of treated specimen and untreated specimen will be obtained. The antibacterial activity evaluation is based on the difference in the viable cell count. Escherichia coli antibacterial rate should be at least 99.9%.
Klebsiella pneumoniae antibacterial rate≥ 99.9%
In the test, two major steps are designed, including inoculation of bacteria and quantitative measurement of bacteria. First, specimens are exposed to test inoculum of Klebsiella pneumoniae, then after incubation the colony count on Klebsiella pneumoniae both of treated specimen and untreated specimen will be obtained. The antibacterial activity evaluation is based on the difference in the viable cell count. Klebsiella pneumoniae antibacterial rate should be at least 99.9%.
PPP 25028
This test program establishes the antibacterial activity performance requirements and corresponding test methods by referring to several international standards. Meanwhile, the legal status of active substances contained in the material and the label on the material will be checked according to the EU BPR regulation. All these activities are ensuring an excellent antibacterial activity performance on a safe basis.
Staphylococcus aureus antibacterial rate≥ 99.9%
In the test, two major steps are designed, including inoculation of bacteria and quantitative measurement of bacteria. First, specimens are exposed to test inoculum of Staphylococcus aureus, then after incubation the colony count on Staphylococcus aureus both of treated specimen and untreated specimen will be obtained. The antibacterial activity evaluation is based on the difference in the viable cell count. Staphylococcus aureus antibacterial rate should be at least 99.9%.
Type Tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Type tested” is issued for products and components. The certification mark demonstrates that the product/component was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements. The certification criteria vary depending on the products in question.
Production Monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.
As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.
In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
