ECE R100 Rev3 Overview
ECE R100 Rev3 is an important European requirement for the approval of road electric vehicles.
The regulation specifies all tests that must be carried out on lithium batteries installed on 4-wheel electric vehicles for transport of persons or goods of road vehicles of categories M and N with electric traction.
The regulation is part of the effort to establish globally harmonized regulations for motor vehicles in order to remove barriers to international trade, promote road safety and protect the environment.

Testing Capabilities
TÜV SÜD’s ISO 17025 accredited battery testing labs can help ensure your batteries comply with the requirements for Rechargeable Energy Storage System (REESS). ECE R100 Rev3 details the safety testing requirement that subject lithium batteries to the main stresses present during their use with vehicles. Specifically, we can help you with:
- Vibration Test – Sinusoidal waveform with logarithmic sweep between 7Hz and 50 Hz then back to 7Hz traversed in 15 minutes. Repeated 12 times for a total of 3 hour in the vertical direction of mount for the REESS, 10G max.
- Thermal Shock and Cycling Test - Test covers changes in temperature extremes from -40C to +60C. Batteries are stored for 6 hours at -60C, then 6 hours at +60C, for a total of 5 cycles.
- Mechanical Shock – 80ms up to 28G depending on class of vehicle, done in either positive or negative direction or both. Typically done on a sled test machine.
- Mechanical Integrity – This test verifies the safety performance of REESS under contact loads which may occur during a vehicle crash. 100KN crush using a 75mm radius crush platen.
- Fire Resistance – This test verifies the resistance of the REESS against exposure to fire from outside vehicle due to fuel spill. Consisting of 4 phases, open fuel fire preheating, followed by direct exposure of the REESSS to the flame, followed by Indirect exposure to the flame then followed by cool down / reaction observation phase.
- External Short Circuit Protection - This test is meant to verify the performance of the REESS protection to a short circuit condition. Less than 5mohm load is connected to the REESS for at least 1hour.
- Overcharge Protection – This test is to verify the overcharge protection performance of the REESS. The REESS is charged at 1/3C rate until protection circuit interrupts or limits the charging.
- Over-Discharge Protection – This test is to verify the over-discharge protection performance of the REESS. The REESS is discharge at a 1/3C rate until protection circuit interrupts or limits the discharging.
- Over-Temperature Protection – This test is to verify the protection performance of the REESS against internal overheating during operation even under cooling failure. The REESS is continuously cycled at manufacturer maximum continuous currents Charge/Discharge while the Ambient air conditions are gradually increased until the temperatures have stabilized or protection devices inhibit the charge and or discharge of the REESS.
