Shock testing reduces the risk of product failure in the field, by simulating shock conditions that products are exposed to during their lifetime. This may be from handling, transportation, or within the equipment’s normal service environments.
The test specification defines the applied shock conditions, these are expressed in pulse shape, duration and acceleration, normally defined in g peak or m/s².
Shock pulses come in many different pulse shapes, common are Half-Sine, Trapezoidal and Terminal Peak Sawtooth. Shock pulses are often applied at least 3 times in both the positive and negative direction, for each of the products axes (Vertical, Longitudinal and Lateral).
