Smart Home Gateways create connectivity for IoT-devices in a household with the Internet. Many IoT-devices are controllable via mobile apps or integrated with cloud services. In case such devices cannot directly connect to the Internet, this functionality can be provided by a gateway.
The certification mark is awarded within the framework of voluntary testing and certification. It demonstrates that the product has been tested and certified by the third-party organisation TÜV SÜD.
The certification criteria "secure cloud connection" and "automated security updates" are selected through a risk modeling based on the IT-Grundschutz-Methodik from the German Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI). The applicable requirements of the system modules "general purpose IoT device" (IT-Grundschutz-Kompendium 2018/02) and "embedded systems" (Final draft 2018/05) are basis for the verification.
The usage of TÜV SÜD certification mark requires annual factory inspections, as well as the on-going support for security support from the vendor.
It is tested, that all cloud connections are encrypted and that the gateway ensures authenticity of the servers through cryptographic mechanisms.
To ensure the gateway is always on the latest firmware version, it is verified that security updates are checked at least daily and obtained from trusted sources. The update is provided by the vendor and automatically installed on the gateway. The list of tested firmware versions can be reviewed here in the corresponding valid certificate.
The voluntary TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is awarded for products indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.
Periodic surveillance and/or monitoring of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification that includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.
As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product testing.
In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will become invalid and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
