What is environmental battery testing?

To ensure a  battery can withstand real-world stresses, environmental battery testing evaluates how it performs under extreme environmental conditions. TÜV SÜD uses test chambers designed specifically for environmental battery testing. We expose batteries to a variety of conditions, such as temperature extremes, vibrations, and moisture.

Why environmental battery testing is important

Environmental battery testing is crucial to facilitating market entry by gaining regulatory approval and consumer trust. Testing against international standards ensures that batteries meet the rigorous requirements set by global standards. It also verifies that batteries will perform safely and effectively under various environmental conditions, assuring the market of their durability and safety. By identifying potential issues and design flaws early in the development lifecycle, testing enhances product reliability and helps to avoid costly product recalls.

How TÜV SÜD can help you with environmental battery testing

Our global experts have a high level of industry and international standards knowledge, and a wealth of environmental battery testing experience. We ensure that your batteries meet all necessary international safety and performance standards.

What our environmental battery testing services include

TÜV SÜD offers environmental testing for high-voltage batteries in accordance with an array of international standards, including ISO 16750, the LV 124 standard, and ISO 12405. Batteries can be actively operated during testing, i.e., charged or discharged.

But what is environmental battery testing? Amongst others, we offer the following environmental tests for high-voltage batteries:

  • Vibration and shock testing, with or without parallel temperature/humidity tests in simultaneous electric operation.
  • Thermal testing, including high-temperature, thermal shock and thermal cycling tests.
  • Ingress protection (IP) testing, e.g. IP56 or IP65 via
    • Dust testing.
    • High pressure jet testing.
    • Splash water testing.
    • Immersion testing (IPx7 and thermal-shock immersion).
  • Humidity testing.
  • Thermal shock testing in dedicated chambers or with water to hot air change.
  • Altitude simulation/low-pressure testing.
  • Gravel impact/stone chipping testing.
  • Salt-spray testing.
