What is the Toy Safety Directive?

Manufacturers and retailers import toy products and parts from all over the world. To ensure they are safe for children to play with, the European Union introduced the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.

The directive establishes minimum safety standards relating to toy features, flammability, substances, documentation and more. To demonstrate that a toy complies with these standards, manufacturers must carry out tests and produce documentation before certifying it with a CE mark.

TUV SUD’s global laboratory network and regulatory experts help you with product compliance so that you can maintain the quality and safety standards expected in global markets like the EU.

Why Toy Safety Directive is important

CE mark on toys offers multiple benefits to manufacturers and retailers, while the consequences of non-compliance can be damaging. CE marking is mandatory for those wishing to sell toy products to 500 million consumers in the European Union and European Economic Area. Failure to comply can result in fines and product recalls.

Toys testing can reveal any problems with products before you go to market, saving you money. CE mark on toys is also a physical demonstration of your commitment to safety which will enhance consumer trust in your brand.
