PTCRB / IoT Network Certification and GCF certification
Support global market access, network interoperability and reliable cellular performance with PTCRB and GCF certification services for wireless and IoT devices. What is PTCRB and GCF certification?
For manufacturers of cellular-enabled products, market readiness depends not only on innovation, but also on proving that devices can connect reliably and operate as expected across mobile networks.
Administered by CTIA Certification, PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB) certification helps verify that cellular devices meet relevant requirements for network connectivity and interoperability. It is especially important for products targeting North American mobile networks and applied to devices using 4G (LTE) and 5G technologies.
GCF certification, or Global Certification Forum (GCF) certification, is a globally recognised certification programme for mobile and wireless devices. It provides a structured pathway for demonstrating conformity with applicable cellular standards and readiness for operation across international mobile networks. The programme is designed for all device types and also includes device field trials on worldwide operator networks.
Together, PTCRB and GCF certification gives manufacturers a structured way to demonstrate wireless performance, support interoperability and prepare connected products for smoother market access.

Have an IoT device?
IoT devices are certified through the IoT Network Certified programme.
The IoT Network Certified programme is a streamlined certification process for cellular-enabled IoT devices utilising PTCRB-certified wireless modules.
Why PTCRB and GCF certification matters
Complex wireless ecosystems
Devices must operate across evolving cellular technologies, network conditions and certification requirements.
Operator and market expectations
Certification is often linked to acceptance by target networks and intended commercial markets.
Higher approval stakes
Gaps in certification readiness can affect testing scope, launch planning and deployment timelines.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What are the differences between PTCRB / IoT Network Certified and GCF certification?
PTCRB certification, originally known as PCS Certification Review Board, adopted its pseudo acronym after the PCS (1900Mhz) band ceased to be the only supported frequency band. It is commonly associated with cellular devices intended for North American mobile networks. The IoT Network Certified (INC) applies to modules for the North American mobile networks while GCF certification is more widely used to support device acceptance in global markets. Depending on the product and target regions, manufacturers may require PTCRB or INC, GCF, or both PTCRB/INC and GCF certifications.
Which devices require PTCRB / IoT Network Certified or GCF certification?
Certification may apply to many types of cellular-enabled products, depending on the device type, supported technologies and target markets. These can include for PTCRB certification:
- Smartphones
- Feature phones
- Tablets
- Wireless modules
- IoT chipsets
- Devices incorporating certified chipsets
- Notebook computers
- Other products using 3GPP-based cellular connectivity
For IoT Network Certified™ certification programme
- IoT devices utilising a PTCRB certified cellular module
For GCF certification, the programme is designed for all device types. It is also expected to include Field Trials for NG-eCall, the EU-mandated IP-based vehicle emergency call system, as part of GCF certification from 2026.
In practice, whether PTCRB/IoT Network Certified, GCF or both are relevant depends on where the product will be deployed and which network or market requirements apply.
Are PTCRB and GCF certification mandatory?
This depends on the product, target market and operator requirements. They are not universally mandatory for every device, but they are often important where network acceptance, operator expectations or market access depend on recognised cellular certification. PTCRB certification is mainly associated with North American requirements, while GCF certification is more broadly used for global markets.
Does PTCRB certification apply only to the United States of America?
No. PTCRB certification is mainly linked to North American operator and market requirements, rather than the United States alone. It can also be relevant for products intended for Canada and other North American deployment scenarios.
What is IoT Network Certified™ certification programme?
IoT Network Certified™ is a CTIA Certification programme developed specifically for cellular-enabled IoT devices. Similar to PTCRB certification, it is designed for IoT products that use PTCRB-certified modules, offering a more tailored certification route for connected devices in the IoT ecosystem.
What kinds of IoT applications can IoT Network Certified™ certification programme support?
The IoT Network Certified™ programme supports a range of cellular-enabled IoT applications, including street lighting, smart cities, real estate, fleet tracking, food storage and network protection. CTIA Certification also offers IoT Network Certified for Smart Connected Infrastructure®, which is intended for mission-critical utility environments where large numbers of connected devices must be tested and checked for reliability.
What are the key benefits of PTCRB certification?
PTCRB certification helps manufacturers demonstrate that devices meet relevant requirements for performance, interoperability and reliability across operator networks. It provides a standardised certification framework that supports network acceptance, smoother device approval and a clearer path to market for cellular-enabled products.
What are the key benefits of GCF certification?
GCF certification helps manufacturers demonstrate that a device meets relevant cellular certification criteria and is prepared to operate across mobile networks. It supports interoperability, network compatibility and broader market acceptance, especially for products intended for international deployment.
Does GCF certification include field trials?
Yes. GCF certification includes device field trials on worldwide operator networks. It is also expected to include Field Trials for NG-eCall, the EU-mandated IP-based vehicle emergency call system, as part of GCF certification from 2026.
