TÜV SÜD Issues IEC 62443-4-1 Certification to SMC Corporation

July 9, 2026

TÜV SÜD, a globally recognized testing and certification company headquartered in Munich, Germany, has issued an IEC 62443-4-1:2018-compliant Industrial IT Security Certification to SMC Corporation (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshiki Takada).

As digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to evolve, manufacturers are accelerating their efforts to automate and digitalize. At the same time, cyber threats have also increased in scale and complexity. Consequently, the adoption of secure-by-design products and components has become increasingly important in automated factory systems. The IEC 62443 series provides a comprehensive framework for industrial control system cybersecurity. As a certification body for IEC 62443, TÜV SÜD provides implementation support, assessment, and certification services.

TÜV SÜD has issued IEC 62443-4-1 certification to SMC Corporation, a leading manufacturer of pneumatic control equipment for factory automation. IEC 62443-4-1 specifies requirements for a secure product development lifecycle. This certification verifies that SMC's product development processes adhere to a secure-by-design approach, incorporating defence-in-depth principles to mitigate cybersecurity risks. It also demonstrates that the company has established processes to effectively manage product security issues, including vulnerability management, throughout the product lifecycle.

Prior to certification, TÜV SÜD provided SMC with IEC 62443-related training services, as well as conducting a gap analysis, to support its certification efforts. Through these activities, SMC has established a secure development process that is aligned with secure development principles and its existing product development methodology.

TÜV SÜD Japan will continue to support the advancement of cybersecurity measures for industrial control systems in Japan through certification, training, and other security-related services. TÜV SÜD aims to contribute to a more secure industrial environment through its cybersecurity expertise and services.
