New ISO 14001:2026 now published

Environmental Management Systems help organizations systematically manage and continuously improve their environmental performance.

April 20, 2026

Environmental Management Systems help organizations systematically manage and continuously improve their environmental performance. The revised ISO 14001:2026 has now been published and sets new priorities for environmental management systems. TÜV SÜD summarizes the most important changes resulting from the revision.

Users of ISO 14001:2026 will need to address the impacts of climate change, expanded environmental aspects, and clearly defined requirements for planning and control more thoroughly in the future. For organizations with certified systems, the publication of the revision means: Take advantage of transition periods and set the course now for successful (re)certification to ISO 14001.

“The new ISO 14001:2026 strengthens the strategic importance of environmental management. It provides greater clarity, integrates environmental aspects more closely into decision-making, and makes the impacts of climate change an integral part of environmental management systems. For organizations, implementing the revised standard is a good opportunity to refine existing processes and further develop their environmental performance in a targeted manner,” says Tobias Lurk, Global Product Performance Manager for ISO 14001 at TÜV SÜD.

Top 5 changes to ISO 14001:2026 at a glance

  1. Climate change as a mandatory component
Climate aspects are fully incorporated into the standard and must be systematically addressed in environmental management.
  2. Expanded environmental aspects
The standard places greater emphasis on biodiversity, resource availability, and pollution levels. This brings ISO 14001:2026 into alignment with the EU Circular Economy Strategy.
  3. More precise risk-based planning
Risk/opportunity identification and action planning are structured more clearly than before.
  4. Greater control in the supply chain
Higher requirements for external processes, upstream and downstream supply chains, as well as their documentation and evidence management.
  5. Greater accountability of management
Top management must manage environmental aspects more visibly and actively drive the further development of environmental performance.

Action required for users – actively utilize transition periods

ISO 14001:2026 was published on April 15, 2026. The publication marks the start of a 36-month transition period. Certificates issued under ISO 14001:2015 remain valid until April 14, 2029, at the latest (depending on the date of issue and the rules of the certification body). Organizations that wish to establish a new environmental management system or recertify following the revision should proceed in a structured manner: analyse existing coverage, define objectives, prioritize measures, and clarify responsibilities. Training for management and specialized departments, as well as internal communication, are essential for swiftly implementing the revision’s requirements. External technical support can help clarify matters and drive implementation efficiently.
