TÜV SÜD, an international third-party certification body, has provided an EPD third-party verification service for the Washlet®, two-piece toilet, wall-hung toilet, and single lavatory faucet which were developed and are sold by TOTO LTD. (Headquarter: Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture; President and Representative Director: Shinya Tamura).
In recent years, amid the demand for environmentally friendly corporate activities, the disclosure of environmental information throughout the product life cycle, based on scientific evidence has attracted attention as a means of increasing corporate transparency and improving competitiveness. EPDs differ from other evaluation indicators in that they can evaluate and disclose not only greenhouse gases but also a wide range of environmental impacts. It is becoming increasingly popular internationally, particularly in Europe, and is now mandatory in many sectors, especially construction.
The EPD issued by TOTO LTD. followed rigorous verification by a third-party organization in accordance with the "International EPD System" scheme, which is one of the international EPD programs. TÜV SÜD evaluated and validated product life cycle assessments (LCAs) from a neutral and professional perspective, thereby contributing to the publication of reliable environmental information to support sustainable choices.
"I believe that, in the future, it will be important for a product to have an LCA background. It is a significant achievement for TOTO to have created a mechanism for LCA evaluation indicators by obtaining EPDs."
(Ryosuke Hayashi, Senior Managing Executive Officer, TOTO LTD.)
"The successful completion of the EPD reflects TOTO’s strong commitment to transparency and sustainability. We are honoured to have been selected as their trusted verification partner. To ensure the highest standards and technical excellence, we brought together a dedicated team of experts from Japan, Germany, and Italy, each of whom contributed in-depth regional knowledge and global expertise."
(Andrea Coscia, President and Representative Director, TÜV SÜD Japan Ltd.)

An EPD is an international environmental label that discloses the environmental impact of products and services throughout their life cycle in quantitative terms. Based on international standards such as ISO 14025 and ISO 21930, it is evaluated using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology and issued after verification by a third-party organization. Unlike other labels, it covers not only greenhouse gases, but also a wide range of environmental impacts, such as resource consumption and water pollution. In recent years, it has been used as a standard for sustainable procurement and design decisions in more than 70 countries, mainly in the construction industry.
