TÜV SÜD has further expanded its expertise in the area of sustainability testing. The latest example is the confirmation of the biogenic carbon content for the Swiss brand RED Plus. As part of its work for their Italian subsidiary, NTS Sport srl, the company has now received a verification statement from TÜV Italia. This confirms the use of renewable materials in the company's hybrid tennis courts.
Biogenic carbon, a crucial component of sustainable products, comes from renewable sources such as biomass or animal by-products. In contrast to fossil carbon from oil, coal or natural gas, biogenic carbon is absorbed and stored in the natural life cycle of plants, trees and soils through the process of photosynthesis. Testing for biogenic carbon content enables companies to accurately distinguish biobased materials from synthetics made of non-renewable resources allowing a clear communication of their environmental performance.
TÜV SÜD conducted extensive testing on RED Plus natural clay infill materials used on NTS Sport tennis courts in accordance with the ASTM D6866 method. This method measures the level of carbon-14, also known as radiocarbon, contained in the materials confirming the biogenic carbon content of the company's product.
“The confirmation of biogenic carbon content for RED Plus,” explains Matteo Simonetto, Sustainability Manager at TÜV SÜD, “is the result of thorough and forward-thinking work. It demonstrates that TÜV Italia is continuously responding to the growing demand for environmentally sustainable services and helping companies minimise their environmental footprint.”
For RED Plus, this verification is also a message to its stakeholders. “The recognition makes us proud and underlines our commitment to ensuring transparency and reliability in our products,” said Michele Corsiero, President of RED Plus.
TÜV SÜD offers a wide range of services for testing and verifying sustainable products, including testing the biogenic carbon content. These services help companies to strengthen their sustainability strategy and make the environmental impact of their products transparent and measurable. Through this and similar initiatives, TÜV SÜD is promoting a more sustainable future for people and the environment.
