UK: Temporarily lifts ban on two POPs

June 2025 - Electrical and electronics, hardlines, softlines, toys and children's products

The UK Government has temporarily removed restrictions1 two chemicals—dechlorane plus and UV-328, which were added as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under UK regulations in March 2025. This amendment is effective from 21 May 2025.

After these two chemicals were added to the UK POPs Regulations, the medical technology sector2 reported that these chemicals are used in crucial medical applications, such as joint replacements, infusion pumps, and diagnostic machines. The ban would lead to severe disruption to the supply of essential medical equipment, and this sector needs time to evaluate the extent of the uses for these substances and find suitable alternatives. Hence, the prohibition is now revoked and this applies to all sectors.

However, it is important to emphasise that the removal of this ban is explicitly time-limited. The UK government remains committed to the aims of the Stockholm Convention and intends to reintroduce restrictions after reviewing essential uses and considering possible further exemptions at an appropriate time.
