The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued the Series Guidelines for products covered under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.
Under these guidelines, multiple product models can now be covered under a single BIS registration, provided they meet the prescribed conditions.
Key Highlights of the Series Guidelines:
Applicants can now include:
- Up to 10 models in one series registration (1 Lead Model + 9 Series Models)
- The model with the highest power rating or worst-case configuration must be selected as the Lead Model for testing.
MeitY has also released detailed criteria for including products under one series. The key parameters include:
- Same IP Ratings
- Same enclosure requirements, with only minor aesthetic changes allowed
- Same Class of Construction
- Same Energy Source and Safeguard System, including:
- ES1 / ES2 / ES3 (Electrical)
- PS1 / PS2 / PS3 (Power)
- TS1 / TS2 / TS3 (Thermal)
- Same Input Voltage across the series.
The guidelines also cover:
- External Energy Sources (Power Adapter / Power Bank / Other Input Devices)
- Mains-operated Internal Power Supply
- Internal Battery-operated Products
Additional Product-Specific Series Requirements:
Along with the above conditions, all models within a series must also comply with the following requirements:
- Same type of microphone and earphone (clip-type, handheld, over-the-ear, etc.)
- Same form factor, wherever applicable (for example: HDDs, SSDs)
- Same charging method (Docking/Contact Charging, USB, Charging Case, Wireless, etc.)
- Smartwatches with SIM and without SIM will be treated as separate series
- Devices with and without a display will be treated as separate series
- Devices with and without touch functionality will be treated as separate series
- Same output ratings and number of outputs must be maintained wherever applicable (such as SMPS and multi-port power adapters)
- Same display type (LCD, LED, etc.), wherever applicable
- Different processors may be used within a series; however, the Lead Model must have the highest Thermal Design Power (TDP) in watts
