EU: EN 15493:2026 on Candle Fire Safety Published

The European candle fire safety standard EN 15493:2026, Candles – Specification for Fire Safety, has been published, replacing EN 15493:2019. The revised standard introduces several important technical updates intended to address evolving candle designs and emerging fire safety concerns, particularly for container candles and multiple-wick products.

The standard applies to candles intended to be burned indoors.

While the standard continues to address core candle fire safety hazards, the 2026 revision introduces several significant enhancements:

  • Improved and expanded terminology and definitions to better reflect current market products and safety concepts, including but not limited to introducing new definition for “multiple-wick candle” and “sustained flaming”.
  • Introduction of specific fire safety requirements for container candles, including a flammability test with fixed impingement time and test until sustained flaming.
  • Introduction of requirements for multiple-wick candles, including provisions intended to prevent hazardous flame interactions during burning.
  • Enhanced reporting requirements to improve consistency and traceability of test results.

According to CEN, latest date by which national standards conflicting have to be withdrawn by 31 Mar, 2027.

Manufacturers, importers, retailers, and brand owners selling candles in the EU are advised to review their product portfolios against the new requirements, and may need to conduct additional testing to demonstrate compliance.
